Description
Scaling and Structure in Transitional and Turbulent Hypervelocity Flows. The overall objective of this proposal is to identify the scaling and structure in transitional and turbulent hypervelocity flows over canonical geometries that are relevant to the US Navy. To achieve this objective, we choose the hollow-cylinder flare (HCF) as the canonical geometry and high-speed Krypton Tagging Velocimetry (KTV) as the prime measurement tool. We estimate that we will be able to resolve scales from 200 Hz to 250 kHz when interrogating multiple velocity profiles, as limited by the test facility and the high-speed KTV system. This approach will enable us to acquire velocity fields with sufficient time resolution to explore new flow physics. The experiments will be performed in the ONR-Stevens Reflected-Shock Tunnel (NSST), which is a Mach 6 facility that is currently being constructed at Stevens Institute of Technology.
