Abstract

This paper reviews techniques to include the bending behavior of sheet metals into finite element method formulations. A new numerically efficient bending correction for the implementation into axisymmetric membrane elements is developed. This bending correction is based on a number of simplifying assumptions. The accuracy of the implementation is demonstrated by analyzing two round cup drawings for which experimental measurements were available from the literature. The range of applicability of the proposed approach is discussed.
