Abstract

Certain practical considerations dictate a configuration of off-normal backscattering for the detection and characterization by ultrasonic means of flaws in composite plates. For plates manufactured of a graphite-epoxy fiber reinforced composite, the flaws tend to be irregularly distributed through the thickness. This paper is concerned with analytical considerations for the detection and characterization of such flaw distributions. Both high- and low-frequency approximations will be presented.
