Abstract

Online open innovation communities often provide ways for people to remix previous work. This remixing can be triggered by others' comments. In this paper we conduct exploratory empirical studies in an online open innovation community in order to study this phenomenon. Comments trigger remixes. Two patterns of this process were observed: A direct pattern in which remixes are created directly after comments are made and a second-degree pattern in which contributors first reply to the comments and then make changes. The choice of comment style also affects the number of remixes made. Comments can be generative, because they spark further investigation of the design space.
