Abstract
The injection molding process incorporates molds containing metal inserts assembled onto core and cavity plates. These inserts contain the molded-part geometry. During mold design the decision often must be made whether to include cooling lines in a given insert. This decision can affect cycle time and thus part cost because a primary function of molds is to cool the resin to form the part. Including cooling lines in the insert increases mold cost but, in some cases, decreases part cost. The authors focus on providing the mold designer with a tool that may be used to estimate the cost benefit of including cooling lines in a given insert.
