N2 - We assess the control of the vortex-induced vibrations of a freely oscillating circular cylinder using a nonlinear energy sink (NES) having linear damping and nonlinear cubic stiffness. This nonlinearity is postulated to enable a resonance that leads to energy pumping from the cylinder over a wide range of frequencies. We consider varying the mass of the NES and determine the effects of its variation on the response of the coupled system. We find multiple stable solutions of the coupled system depending on the mass ratio (μ). In addition, we find that the oscillation amplitude of the NES is large which may restrict its practical implementation.
