Abstract
The increasing installation of combined-cycle units (CC), by recognizing their significant advantages in achieving carbon emission reduction and dealing with high variability of renewables, has put forward higher requirements on better unit commitment scheduling and economic dispatch solutions, which urges ISOs to continuously improve CC unit models in their security-constrained unit commitment (SCUC) framework. This paper proposes two alternative approaches on the CC unit operation cost modeling for the purpose of improving SCUC computational performance. In addition, the concept of domination configuration is proposed to enhance the modeling of time-dependent startup costs according to preference of market participants and physical characteristics of CC units. The IEEE 118-bus system with multiple CC units is adopted to evaluate performance of the proposed models.
