Abstract

An experimental study of heat transfer to power-law fluids in horizontal circular and square ducts has been undertaken. The thermal wall condition is the constant heat input per unit axial length. The predictions of some popular correlations for the circular duct are compared with the experimental data. The experimental local heat transfer coefficients are also compared with the predictions of a computer code based on the parabolized form of the equations of conservation of mass, momentum and energy. The theoretical model allows for such effects as natural convection, viscous dissipation and variable viscosity. The numerical predictions compare favourably with the experimental data.
