Abstract

This paper provides a framework for robust transmission of images over networks that exhibit both packet loss and random bit errors. Although automatic repeat request (ARQ) based schemes may be employed to correct for bit errors, delay constraints may limit their application. Our contributions to this paper are two fold: (1) We study the impact of bit errors as well as packet loss on the packet-loss only MDC scheme that we recently proposed [11]. (2) We provide theoretical formulation which will allow us to modify the previous MDC scheme to allow for robustness against bit errors as well. Experimental results carried out on the packet-loss-only MDC framework show that although this MDC was designed to take care of only packet losses, the performance of this scheme is better than some SDC only schemes.
