Abstract
Model tests of an anchored flexible wall subject to base shaking have shown a strong dependance of the response of the soil-wall system on the soil stiffness. The generation of pore pressure in the backfill leads to a reduction in the natural frequency of the system and the build-up of large amplitude oscillations as the fundamental frequency approaches the earthquake driving frequency. Under these conditions, the degradation of stiffness due to pore pressure generation is more critical to the stability of the structure than the onset of liquefaction in the free field. A range of model tests have been carried out which considered dry and saturated conditions, the depth of the anchor wall and of the water table. The paper describes a Coulomb type calculation for the dynamic earth pressure.
