Abstract

The performance of tokamak fusion test reactor (TFTR) plasmas with reversed magnetic shear (RS) is degraded by the substantial loss of fast ions. This is obtained from an experiment with a short tritium beam pulses injected into deuterium beam heated RS plasmas. The diagnosed plasmas are subjected to transport modeling with the TRANSP code which indicates that up to 40% beam power is lost on a time scale much shorter than the beam-ion slowing down time.
