Abstract
As integrated site remediation management is increasingly becoming a practice, the search for innovative, cost effective methods for in situ groundwater treatment has intensified. Over the past few years, research has been conducted on the utilization of various plume interception and treatment technologies and the development of engineered systems which can provide simultaneous control and treatment of contaminated plumes. Such systems can be either passive, where no groundwater handling or other intervention is required after construction, or active where some degree of groundwater handling is required on either an intermittent or continuous basis. Contaminant treatment takes place in a controlled section in the subsurface without requiring extraction and treatment of groundwater on the surface. An overview of such technologies is presented in this paper.
