Abstract
Enormous increases in computational power and the availability of immense data sets have led to great interest in approaches to data visualization. This has enabled policy-makers and other decision-makers to better understand and discuss the phenomena of interest. They can see ‘what is’ in their world and this often quickly leads to questions of ‘what if’. To pursue these kinds of questions, they need model-based interactive visualizations that enable them to make decisions of interest and see the consequences of these decisions. To support such explorations, we have developed the notion of policy flight simulators. This chapter elaborates this concept and illustrates it with two extensive case studies.
