N2 - Growing requirements for improved forging product quality, reduced development cycle times, and minimized production costs are forcing many forging companies to reassess their part and process development practices. The application of knowledge-based systems has a great potential providing efficient solutions to complex engineering design problems such as forging. A knowledge-based system for part and process design of hot forged components is under development at the Design and Manufacturing Institute (DMI) at Stevens Institute of Technology. This system integrates knowledge about all aspects of product design and manufacturing and provides powerful reasoning and decision-making for reducing the time between product conception and final production. This paper discusses the structure of this system and the hot forging part and process model implemented in it.
