N2 - The ability to measure the near-surface residual stresses associated with shot-peening is useful from a quality control and certification perspective. This research uses nonlinear Rayleigh surface waves to measure near-surface residual stresses. Experiments are conducted on three different aluminum alloy (AA 7075) samples with different levels of residual stresses. The nonlinear ultrasonic results show a large increase in the acoustic nonlinearity parameter, indicating the potential of nonlinear ultrasonics for the in situ characterization of near-surface residual stresses.
