N2 - Compressive batch gravity thickening of flocculent slurries such as activated sludge is examined in terms of the models of A.S. Michaels & J.C. Bolger and of P. Kos. The results of simulation experiments are presented to show that the compressive models exhibit the proper behavior. The Sludge Volume Index (SVI) is studied theoretically and using simulations. Using compressive models, it is shown that the variation of SVI with respect to initial concentration can be predicted. It is concluded that the SVI test is ambiguous, and recommendations are made suggesting improved parameters which could be used to predict thickener performance.
