Abstract

A method for determining the mode shapes of nonlinear vibratory systems is described. The method is a combination of Galerkin's method and invariant manifold techniques and is applicable to both discrete and distributed parameter systems. In this paper the basic theory is outlined and applied to determine the nonlinear mode shapes of a linear, Euler-Bernoulli beam attached to a nonlinear elastic foundation.
