One-Dimensional Lattice Gases with Linear Interaction

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter gives an introduction to the statistical mechanics of lattice gases. The lattice gas with universal attractive interactions is used to illustrate the mean-field theory and the appearance of phase transitions. The 1D lattice gas with n sites and linear interaction potential in an external field εij=1n2|i-j|+1n2(i+j) is introduced and studied. The exact solution of this system is obtained in the isothermal-isobaric ensemble and shown to have a phase transition for non-zero external field strength x> 0. The properties of the system in the grand canonical ensemble are discussed.
