Abstract
The possibility is shown of using the modulation of ultrasound by vibrations caused by the presence of cracks for non-linear acoustic detection and ranging. The method is based on pulsed ultrasonic sounding with strobing of the received signal and simultaneous excitation in the sample of low frequency vibrations. The existence of a crack is characterized by the presence of modulation of the ultrasonic wave that is reflected from it. Visualization of the position of the crack in a model object (a metallic rod) has been achieved. The possibility is shown experimentally of selecting a crack against the background of a strong signal reflected from a hollow. The special features are studied of the non-linear properties of a crack as a function of the polarization of flexural oscillations of the rod.
