Abstract
The various aspects of the redesign of the first-year engineering curriculum at the Stevens Institute of Technology, New Jersey, is discussed. The major goal was to provide the students an early bonding with engineering and its style and task orientation as distinguished from science. The redesign is aimed at initiating developing of competencies that will build through subsequent design experiences. The learning environment is distinguished by a large core providing significant breadth together with the necessary depth in engineering disciplines.
