Abstract

Stability of salt-finger convection in steady shear flow is examined. Both the cases of constant and variable vertical shear are considered. The results based on linear stability analysis indicate that for the cases of variable shear profiles without inflection points, the most unstable mode is that of two-dimensional rolls aligned downshear. For this most unstable mode, a nonlinear stability analysis is carried out, and the results accurate to second order in wave amplitude are presented.
