Abstract
The development and execution of a field methodology for collection of soil and groundwater samples to conduct laboratory anaerobic biodegradability studies of pentachlorophenol (PCP) are described. The main objective of the sampling procedure is to avoid contact of the subsurface sample materials with elements indigenous to the above-surface environment, especially oxygen and microbial contamination from air. A detailed description of the sampling methodology, associated equipment, procedures and limitations is presented. The results of the field sampling program are also discussed to illustrate the effectiveness of this methodology.
