N2 - The stability of ancient cavities in historic areas presents high complex problems due to their nature, existing environment and valuable cultural heritage. There are risk sources that might cause large damages and deterioration and, in some cases, it is necessary to put forward conservation measures in order to prevent damage or destruction of the heritage patrimony. The study of Yulin caves, in Gansu Province, China, is presented in this paper. For these caves, it is necessary to identify the several risk sources involved in the stability of the cliffs and the associated caves and to perform risk analysis of the structures involved by considering the 3D numerical and Bayesian Networks probabilistic models. A methodology for risk management will be presented for preventive conservation of the west side of Yulin caves.
