Abstract

The need for standardization in the area of process-aware information systems in general, and workflow management in particular, is a long-standing issue. A number of candidate standards have emerged, with various degrees of subsequent adoption. This chapter provides an overview of the landscape of standardization efforts in the area of workflow management, and provides a detailed presentation of a standard for workflow definition (namely XPDL) and another one for workflow execution (namely Wf-XML).
