Abstract
What motivates participants to donate their time to collective intelligence web sites? We examine the possible mechanisms that drive the website Digg, an online news consolidator in which users help determine the popularity and visibility of stories and other web-based information. Those who submit stories that become popular also actively read and vote for each other's stories. This behavior can be explained as a form of reciprocity; we show evidence for this and discuss the implications for other communities of practice.
