Abstract
The two kinds of tests conducted at the Nevada test site--those in vertical tunnels and those in horizontal tunnels--are described. The steps that precede a weapon test are then outlined. The potential advances in instrumentation from fiber optics are discussed. Attention is then given to the question of whether simulations can supplant tunnel tests and to questions concerning stockpile reliability.
