Abstract

This paper applies a Systems Thinking methodology to analyze the emerging Social Media System of Systems (SoS). Since the rise of platforms like Facebook, X (formerly known as Twitter), Instagram and TikTok, the overall effects of them on society at large remain unclear. While there have been numerous studies that outline their potential effects on individuals and populations, few examine the landscape that has created this "failing"system in the first place. Identifying and understanding the key stakeholders involved in this complex System of Systems is ultimately the first step in beginning to develop a clear path forward. Through the agent-based analysis identified in this paper, a simplified picture of the system can be developed - one where current gaps are made apparent. Through the collection of inherent self-interests, stakeholder goal alignment, and available technology, it is made clear how the system came to be. In addition, this paper also discusses real-time case studies involving the Social Media platforms X and Reddit, that will ultimately test the framework established in this paper. By identifying the complex relationships underpinning the Social Media System of Systems, it is hoped that corrective actions can be taken to prevent the failed system from sliding further.
