Abstract
A solution is given for the hydrodynamical equations pertaining to the cochlea of the ear. It is shown that the WKB approximation always holds in the region of maximum displacement amplitude of the basilar membrane. The solution obtained in analytical form is applicable over the entire audible frequency range and in the ultrasonic range. It is consistent with the observations of von Bekesy in the low-frequency range.
