Abstract

Wind storms, notably hurricanes and tornadoes, produce annual losses which are only exceeded by those created by floods. In spite of these colossal losses, little research effort has been directed towards the understanding of the characteristics and causes of excessive wind loadings on low-rise structures. Building codes for hurricane-prone coastal areas contain some of the most stringent requirements, and it is clear that improvements are needed in order to reduce losses.
